It’s not that the new Apple TV wasn’t rumored, but still — announcing it here at the new iPad launch? Bold, Apple. Really bold. Looks as if Apple’s hobby is now becoming a right-hand man for the iPad, and given the increasing importance placed on AirPlay, it’s no wonder that the next Apple TV feels less like a standalone box and more like a killer $99 accessory for your iPad. We got a brief look at the new 1080p-capable set-top box here in San Francisco, and not surprisingly, it’s small. Really small. In fact, it’s just as tiny as the prior Apple TV. It’s hard to glean much about the functionality given the limited setup we’re seeing here, but suffice it to say, to-be iPad buyers are apt to become the largest sect of Apple TV buyers if the two are marketed together correctly. Apple Television Set Coming Soon, According To Analyst

An analyst who specializes in all things Apple is certain that Apple branded Television sets are coming next year. He listed all of the details he thinks it’ll have, and is so sure that he urged people to not buy the current set-top box (2nd generation Apple TV).

Business Insider sat down with analyst Gene Munster during their IGNITION conference. Munster strongly believes that an Apple-branded TV set is coming, and he listed all of the features it’ll have.

It’ll be a “full-fledged TV set” not a set-top box like the current Apple TV, mostly because Apple thinks people hate plugging in external gadgets. Continue reading »

iPhone Dev Team has released a bundle for PwnageTool for Mac and iH8sn0w has also released Sn0wbreeze 2.7.2 for Windows to jailbreak (untethered) Apple TV 2G Software 4.2.2.

Apple released Apple TV 2G Software Update 4.2.2 (iOS 4.3 – build 8F305) to fix some minor bugs and also add an audio output setting for switching to 16-bit audio for compatibility with some TVs and AV receivers.

Dev Team has provided the following details on their blog:

Apple released a minor update to iOS 4.3 for AppleTV2G (the IPSW name still says 4.3, but the build version changed from 8F202 to 8F305). @i0n1c was once again able to quickly port his original 4.3.1 untether (the exploit that wouldn’t die!) to this version. Continue reading »

Apple TV updated to 4.1.1 may fix resolution and download problems

apple tv, News  Comments Off on Apple TV updated to 4.1.1 may fix resolution and download problems

See, sometimes dreams do come true. Just days after we asked how you’d tweak the second generation Apple TV, in flies an update that a good many TV owners have been anxiously awaiting. The 4.1.1 update purportedly solves “an issue that causes some high-definition TVs to incorrectly display at 480p,” as well as an issue that “may cause a movie or TV show to be re-downloaded.” It’s pretty obvious that Apple’s aiming to correct a nagging color / banding problem that has been plaguing some owners since day one, but according to users over at Apple Insider’s forums, it’s not a cure-all solution. A handful of members have stated that their sets — typically using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter — still display incorrect colors after the update. Flip on your own box and get the download started, and let us know if it’s the fix you’ve been after down in comments below.

It’s always a bit of a funny business paying for hacks, but Fire Core’s aTV Flash is a serious product and we can’t blame them for trying to make a buck off the back of it. Now the sequel, aTV Flash (black), is here in beta form, bringing a subset of the aTV Flash’s functionality to the brand new Apple TV, which runs that fancy new iOS-based 4.0 software. Most importantly, Fire Core brings a HTML5-compatible browser, but the Last.fm app and Plex Client are welcome tag alongs. “Coming soon” features include expanded media format support and networked storage support. The pre-order beta price is $20, while the final hack will retail for $30. For existing users, (black) is a free upgrade.

We’ve some more good news on the Apple TV hacking front. You may recollect that we had reported that the iPhone Dev Team had jailbroken iOS 4.1 firmware for Apple TV using SHAtter.

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has now figured out a way to install iOS apps on Apple TV by modifying its type to make them Apple-TV compatible. However, before you get excited, please note that it is still not possible to launch the installed iOS app as there is no application launcher in Apple TV. Continue reading »
