We all knew it was coming, Musclenerd has officially jailbroken the AppleTv 2nd gen. He tweeted stating:

“AppleTV 2G SHAttered and jailbroken (not quite sure how to run apps yet!)”

For those wanting to get something out of this jailbreak you might want to go get an early release AppleTv 2 and not wait. Although nothing is different with a jailbroken AppleTv since there aren’t apps out for it yet I can’t wait to see where this leads.

Apple TV restores in iTunes via micro-USB, video of UI hacked onto iPod touch

It sure didn’t take long for the dev community to hack into Apple TV’s iOS build. One of the first payouts is a port of Apple TV’s “lowtide” 10-foot user interface to an iPod touch as briefly demonstrated in the first video after the break. While not very useful on such a small display, that could change when ported to the iPad’s bigger 10-inch display. In fact, that might be Apple’s plan according to our friend Erica Sadun who’s been busily spelunking the Apple TV’s disk image. She posits that the iPad could launch the lowtide UI when responding to AirPlay requests in a future iOS build. Continue reading »

Apple Remote app 2.0 for iPhone and iPad, Adds support for new Apple TV

Sep 282010

No surprises here, but Apple’s just released version 2.0 of the Remote app for iPhone and iPad, which adds in support for the new iOS-based Apple TV in addition to iTunes on OS X. The interface is mostly the same — a trackpad-like screen for ATV remote control and an iPod-like interface for more direct media playback — but it’s now optimized for the Retina display on the iPhone 4 and the larger screen size of the iPad. Since the new Apple TV is streaming-only, Remote also now has better support for controlling shared music libraries, making remote control of iTunes on your HTPC slightly easier as well. It’s available now and it’s free, so go grab it.

Apple TV Jailbreak has been confirmed

The Shatter exploit that was discovered for iOS 4.1 devices has, predictably enough, been found to function on the latest Apple TV as well. Though a jailbreak fit for distribution is still brewing for all of Apple’s iOS wares, this will be welcome news to folks interested in trying to add a little extra functionality to Apple’s hockey puck of a media streamer. Then again, even the best of apps might not make up for it being a 720p media device in a 1080p world.

Apple TV (2010) first look / hands-on!

So we had a chance to spend a little time with the new and improved (and dirt cheap) Apple TV, and we like what we see. The streaming was speedy and extremely clear during our demo, and the overall speed of the interface seemed really solid. We also learned that the box is indeed 720p (just as we’d reported earlier). Apple told us that they felt that using 720p allowed them to strike a balance between quality and bandwidth. We’re guessing most people won’t complain if the service works as advertised. Take a look at a few of the pics below, and we’re going to go back for a deeper look! Continue reading »

Apple Will Broadcast Tomorrow’s Special iPod Music Event LIVE !

Aug 312010

I don’t know if this is first for an Apple event but well, Apple has just announced that they are going to live stream tomorrow’s “Special Media Event” which will be mainly geared towards their new2010 iPod lineup. You will have to have either a Mac running Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6 SnowLeopard, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad to watch the streaming. If you are a Windows user, you will be out of luck which kinda sucks in my opinion.

Apple Special Event

Live broadcast of the event will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 1, 2010 at (click here to see what time is it in your region). We’ll have the video embedded here (that is if Apple provides the embedding code), and of course stay tuned to us as we will cover all the bits once the dust has settled !
