Verizon’s been telegraphing its intent to drop unlimited data plans for nearly a year, and despite the fact that LTE smartphones launched with all-you-can-eat options, those plans haven’t changed one bit. Reuters reports that Verizon will finally nix the megabyte buffet this summer, replacing it with a fully tiered data pricing scheme, though CFO Fran Shammo also floated the idea that tiered data could open up an avenue for family data plans. We’ve never really enjoyed sharing minutes, so we doubt counting our kilobytes will be much fun, but we suppose there’s always room for Verizon to pleasantly surprise us with a really low price for mobile web browsing. Right? By the by, Fran also reiterated claims that the next iPhone will be a global device, and said that when it launches on AT&T, it’ll hit Verizon stores at the very same time.

There has been a lot of debate and speculation on how AT&T detects the unofficial iPhone tethering. Android Police has provided some insight into how AT&T is able to identify users who are using the unofficial tethering option.

AT&T’s Randall Stephenson said that acquiring T-Mobile will boost network capacity and improve service for devices such as iPhone.

When AT&T announced that it will be acquiring T-Mobile USA, we had also mentioned that the acquisition should help in AT&T and T-Mobile to improve the voice quality thanks to the increased cell tower density and broader network infrastructure. Continue reading »

Will AT&T Acquires T-Mobile US For $39 Billion

at&t, News  Comments Off on Will AT&T Acquires T-Mobile US For $39 Billion
Mar 202011

AT&T, the second largest mobile provider in the United States has announced they intend to purchase T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for a staggering $39 billion worth of cash and stock options.

T-Mobile

The German Telco had been looking to offload the American arm of T-Mobile for a while now, and while many thought Sprint would be the likely purchasers, AT&T has struck a deal. With existing T-Mobile frequencies being compatible with those of AT&T (GSM), the purchase makes more sense than any involvement with Sprint, who’s current network runs on the CDMA standard. AT&T is reportedly cracking down on use of MyWi, a Cydia tweak used to create a personal hotspot using your iPhone, according to ModMyi.

One user notes that AT&T first contact him with an SMS saying, “AT&T Free Msg: Did you know tethering your Smartphone to a computer requires a tethering plan? Pls call 888-860-6789 for details or visit att.com/dataplans.”

The SMS was then followed up with an email that warned he would be switched to the tethering plan if he continue to tether.

If you’re planning to buy iPad 2 with Wi-Fi+3G in the US, then it is important to remember that you get an option to select the model that either supports AT&T’s network or Verizon’s CDMA network – not both.

Though Verizon was selling the original iPad along with AT&T, the original iPad with Wi-Fi+3G only supported AT&T’s network so Verizon had to offer the MiFi mobile hotspot with the original iPad with Wi-Fi only model for 3G data. Continue reading »

iPhone 4 may get AT&T mobile hotspot on February 13th

at&t, iphone 4, rumors  Comments Off on iPhone 4 may get AT&T mobile hotspot on February 13th
Feb 032011

So you might have noticed a few reviews of Verizon’s iPhone 4 crop up last night, nothing unusual about that, but a couple of its reviewers have had something to say about AT&T’s version of the phone as well. Walt Mossberg and David Pogue (who has since stricken the date from his review) both pinpoint February 13th as the date when they expect AT&T to turn on the Personal Hotspot capability that Verizon’s iPhone will have from launch. That’s expected to happen with an update to iOS 4.3, which recently went out to developers in its third beta iteration, suggesting the software’s nearly mature enough for public consumption and seemingly fitting right into this timeline. Mind you, this is still not concrete information, as Mossberg could conceivably have been talking of AT&T’s Mobile Hotspot app which is launching on the same day on devices like the Inspire 4G, and Pogue could have deleted the date for similar reasons, but we’re somehow disinclined to believe that two gentlemen in a position to have insider(ish) intel would both make such a mistake at the same time.

You know what that is, don’t you? That’s right: AT&T’s new $50 smartphone. In an aggressive move targeted at tweenagers still taking mirror-based MySpace profile pics with their Motorola RAZRs, both new and upgrade-eligible existing AT&T customers will be able to get the cut-rate iPhone 3GS starting tomorrow, January 7. According to the PR, the price for phones sold in Apple channels will be determined by — you guessed it — Apple, so bargain shoppers should stick to the AT&T retail outlets. And there you have it — do with the information what you will.
