Apple had renamed iPhone OS 4.0 to iOS 4.0 at yesterday’s WWDC 2010 Keynote address and seeded iOS 4.0 Golden Master to developers of its iPhone Developer program.

It is less than 24 hours since it was released and not surprisingly MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team has announced that it is possible to jailbreak iOS 4 using jailbreak tool – Redsn0w.

The Golden Master version means that it is the shipping version of the software that developers must use to develop and submit iPhone apps that are compatible with iOS 4.0. Continue reading »

iPhone 4 announced, launching June 24 for $199

Apple, iphone 4, iPhone 4.0, iphone os, itunes, News  Comments Off on iPhone 4 announced, launching June 24 for $199

Apple has unveiled its new iPhone 4 after a couple wild, unprecedented months of leaks. Sure, it looks exactly like we expected it to (Steve compares it to an old Leica camera), with a glass front and back, but it’s what’s on the inside that counts, kids. The stainless steel band that goes around the phone is an antenna system, while also providing the main structure of the phone, though it’s plugged into the same old GSM / UMTS radio you all know and love — there’s a reason they didn’t call it the iPhone 4G. There’s also of course that front facing camera we were all anticipating, a rear camera with LED flash, and a new high resolution display that doubles the pixels in each direction (960 x 640) for a 4X overall pixel count increase — Apple calls it a “Retina Display.” It’s rated at 326ppi, which Apple claims is beyond the human eye’s limit of distinction. Check out an example of the new screen up against the iPhone 3G after the break. Similar to the iPad, it’s an IPS display, offering 800:1 contrast. Naturally, it’s still the same old 3.5-inch size. Under the hood is the A4 processor that runs the iPad. Despite the new engine (and the 25% thinner chassis), Apple managed to make the battery slightly larger, and the new handset is rated at 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music. Oh, and that WiFi? It’s 802.11n now. The camera has been bumped to 5 megapixels, with 5X digital zoom and a “backside illuminated sensor,” which now can also record HD video at 720p / 30fps. Dev Team Will Release Tools To Unlock iPhone OS 4.0, iPhone OS 3.1.3

hacks, iphone 3.1.3, iPhone 4.0, iphone os, jailbreak, News  Comments Off on Dev Team Will Release Tools To Unlock iPhone OS 4.0, iPhone OS 3.1.3

We had reported yesterday that Blacksn0w, an extremely popular tool to unlock iPhone for iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPhone OS 3.1.2 had been successfully ported to work with the latest beta version of iPhone OS 4.0 and baseband 05.11.07.

However, since it worked only with baseband 05.11.07, it meant that users who had accidentally upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.3 or iPhone OS 4.0 (when it is released) will not be able to unlock their iPhone.

It also meant that users who bought an iPhone with the latest iPhone OS (iPhone OS 3.1.3 or later) won’t be able to use Blacksn0w to unlock their iPhone.

MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team has just tweeted some good news for users who fall in this category:

People still ask, but sure, with both 4.0 & iPhoneHD coming out this month, so too will the 3.1.3/4.0 carrier unlocks :)

So looks like they’ve managed to unlock baseband 05.12.01 that was bundled in iPhone OS 3.1.3 and also the new baseband 05.13.04 bundled in the latest beta version of iPhone OS 4.0 – iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4. Continue reading »

Blacksn0w, an extremely popular tool to unlock iPhone for iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPhone OS 3.1.2 has been successfully ported to work with the latest beta version of iPhone OS 4.0 and baseband 05.11.07.

This Blacksn0w port is based on modified binaries by msft.guy and the original Blacksn0w unlock released by Geohot.

The port is still buggy and one needs to re-apply the patched files every time the iPhone is rebooted.

You can’t tether an iPhone to the iPad?

ipad, iphone, iPhone 4.0, iphone os, News  Comments Off on You can’t tether an iPhone to the iPad?

This isn’t so much news as it is a public service announcement: even in markets where iPhone tethering has launched, you’ve never been able to use it to connect to an iPad, and you won’t be able to when AT&T flips the switch on tethering with the release of OS 4. That’s clearly not AT&T’s fault, it’s Apple’s — the iPhone inexplicably supports only USB and Bluetooth for sharing its internet connection, even though jailbroken apps like MyWi prove that a WiFi connection is totally doable and countless other handsets already support WiFi routing. And iPad doesn’t support using another device as a Bluetooth modem, either. And as long as you’re paying the tethering fee, there’s no reason why AT&T wouldn’t want you tethering the iPad; you’ll certainly be able to do it with any phone in AT&T’s lineup that can create a WiFi hotspot, after all, and we’re sure they’d be happy to take your overage cash once you hit 2GB regardless of the device you’re using to gobble the data.

Need a bit more evidence that the next iPhone will do video conferencing? Then take a good, hard look at the exciting screenshot above, which supposedly comes from a field test firmware for the next-gen iPhone that Apple is apparently working on.

See that screen there? That’s from the minty fresh beta 4 of iPhone OS 4.0, which was just released to developers moments ago. Unless our eyes are badly mistaken, that’s an option to setup internet tethering on AT&T, something that WWAN warriors have been waiting for since… oh, forever. We’re downloading the new build as we speak, and we’ll let you know if we find anything out. Oh, and don’t get your hopes up too high — AT&T proclaimed that it was “still waiting on better network performance” before enabling iPhone tethering just three weeks ago.
