Spirit Jailbreak

Earlier today, the guy behind Spirit jailbreak tool came out with a series of tweets which hintstowards the possibility of the “next version” of Spirit jailbreak tool coming very soon. We don’t know for sure if it will be called Spirit or Spirit v2, but what we know is that it is based on userland exploit, and that it will work with all iOS based devices including iPhone 4 on iOS 4.0.1/ 4.1 and iPad on iOS 3.2.1.

iPhone headed for T-Mobile USA in Q3?

iphone  Comments Off on iPhone headed for T-Mobile USA in Q3?
Jul 212010

We hear so many iPhone-Verizon-tomorrow-OMG rumors that our nation’s brave also-ran carriers hardly get a word in edgewise. While Sprint remains a total longshot, T-Mobile USA is an interesting proposition for the mere fact that it’s a GSM network, though its 1700 / 2100 3G network remains ostensibly incompatible with the iPhone 4’s existing radio. According to Cult of Mac, a “highly placed source” at T-Mobile let it slip that they’ve got an 80 percent chance of getting the iPhone in Q3. Now, that’s an oddly specific number, and we have no idea what it’s contingent on, or how much exactly this source knows. Basically, we don’t know a lot here. Of course, the biggest evidence of this possible T-Mobile coup remains the statement from Deutsche Telekom’s CEO in March, saying that the USA branch is hoping to get the iPhone later this year. We really don’t know who or what to believe, but we do know one thing: if Apple decides to sell a T-Mobile USA iPhone, there’s an 80+ percent chance it will tell everybody.

Well, it’s about time. Touted back in March as one of the pillar apps to benefit from the new multitasking API, Skype has finally been updated to iOS 4 compatibility. We’re seeing crisper, more retina display-friendly graphics and, more importantly, background VoIP (not for iPhone 3G, naturally). A notification window will pop up when you’re called or messaged, and you can use other apps while on the line chatting to international friends at reduced rates. Even on the lock screen, if you receive a call, sliding to unlock will take you immediately into the call. Video chat still isn’t here — a darn shame given the lack of other options now — but now you’ve got even more of a reason to rack up those rollover minutes on AT&T’s voice plan. Download away!

Update: Remember when Skype was talking about charging extra for calls over 3G starting this month? Straight from the horse’s mouth: “we no longer have plans to charge a supplement to make calls over 3G.”

iPhone Dev Team has just reported that with iOS 4 or higher, Apple has started putting ‘soft’ SHSH blob checks in the firmware.

This means that like iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, if iTunes can’t get the SHSH blobs for iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2nd generation (due to signing window being closed), the iTunes restore will error out.

According to Dev Team, soft SHSH blob check can be easily bypassed by using Redsn0w and PwnageTool. Continue reading »

Sherif Hasim has figured out an easy way to activate iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G without needing the official iPhone carrier SIM.

Please note it doesn’t unlock your iPhone but it activates it. But it helps you to hactivate your iPhone without the need to hack your iPhone.

Sherif had also discovered an exploit in the baseband (05.12.01) that was bundled with iPhone OS 3.1.3 earlier in the year. Continue reading »

It’s not surprising that after Apple finished explaining the iPhone 4 antenna issues to the press today, the company wanted to go one step further and say “yes, actually, we do test the hell out of these phones before we release them to the public.” Though Steve Jobs went over the lengthy and intensive kinds of radio evaluation that goes on at Apple’s headquarters, it didn’t seem to be enough for the folks in Cupertino. And that, we suspect, is why we were invited (along with a small group of other journalists) to take a brief tour of Apple’s Infinite Loop labs. Though we weren’t allowed to shoot video or take pictures, we can tell you about what we did — and what we didn’t — see and hear behind closed doors. Continue reading »

iOS 4.0.1 has been released for iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G. While the iPhone 4 and 3GS users will have to wait for a new jailbreak tool, iPhone 3G can go ahead and jailbreak their phone on iOS 4.0.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5. Again, this is strictly for iPhone 3G only. All other iOS based devices will be jailbreakable once Comex releases his new jailbreak tool.

Well it’s not the full 4.1 we were expecting… but here’s a little tidbit from Apple. One of the main features? The update “improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display.” Interesting. We’re updating some devices right now, and will report back with what we find.
