These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS on the iOS 5.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac tutorial is here.

This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please wait until we have posted a tutorial on how to update to iOS 5 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock. The jailbreak is also tethered for all devices except the old bootrom iPhone 3GS which means you will need to connect your device to the computer each time you reboot. Finally, it may be prudent to save your SHSH Blobs.

Apple today released iOS 4.3.5 which similar to iOS 4.3.4 will block the recent jailbreak released by comex. Do not update if you want to remain jailbroken.

If you have a device other than the iPad 2 and have not already saved your iOS 4.3.3 SHSH Blobs you can use iFaith to save them. You can find instructions on how to do that here.

Comex has posted the source code for JailbreakMe 3.0 on his GitHub page.

Codenamed ‘saffron’ the jailbreak uses a PDF that exploits the font system into installing a custom payload, explains Sogeti.

Two exploits are used to jailbreak Apple devices by opening a PDF file in the MobileSafari browser: initial code execution is obtained through a vulnerability in the Freetype Type 1 font parser, allowing subsequent exploitation of a kernel vulnerability to disable code signing enforcement, get root privileges and “install” the jailbreak. The same kernel vulnerability is also exploited at each reboot to provide an untethered jailbreak, using the Incomplete Codesign technique to bootstrap the kernel exploit

For the convenience of kernel hackers like @comex and @i0n1c, we have a new redsn0w 0.9.8b3 that supports a TETHERED jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 on all devices that have 4.3.4 except the iPad2. The vast majority of people will want to stay back at 4.3.3 because that’s where the untethered jailbreak is! There are no new features in 4.3.4 – only fixes for jailbreak exploits.
