I keep all of my media on an external drive. Currently I am in the process of backing up all of my TV Shows and I have labeled all of the media as such (TV Show using the Media Kind tab in itunes). I now find myself in a position where I have to move all of these files to a larger external hard drive and then drag them back into itunes for them to be recognized or "found". My question is this: Even though I selected "TV Show" as the type of media before the move, when I drag them back into itunes they return to being labeled "Movie" and I must go through every file and change it back again. Any way to keep the "TV Show" tag on the file? Thanks for any info you can provide

Here's another thing that I discovered quickly -- maybe it's only germane to my situation, which is, in brief:
- I have media files in My Music from non-ITunes CD rips, and various download sources.
- I have media files in iTunes Media from ITunes purchases and iTunes CD rips
As you describe in your 'Wrong Way' section, when I moved the My Music folder (which contains the iTunes folder and iTunes Media subfolder) from its original location (drive C:) to my new hard drive, the file and path references in the iTunes Library became invalid. I discovered, however, that the process of re-building the references need not be done track-by-track. Again, as you describe above, when I tried to play a track with a broken link, iTunes allowed me to locate it manually. Once I located the first track successfully (manually), iTunes then offered to look in the same location (automatically) for the other broken links. Bingo! It restored the links for nearly every file in the database.
Thanks again for the excellent tutorial.

Aarggh. If only I had read this before moving my folders with Windows Explorer. I'm migrating to a larger hard drive on the same machine. Fortunately, I have a relatively small iTunes library -- not such a tremendous time suck to re-build it, and the playlists and ratings, etc. weren't of much importance. And one unintended benefit is -- by going thru the lot track-by-track, I'll finally get rid of all those tracks I'll never listen to, ever.
Even though I didn't take advantage of your instructions, I want to compliment you on your clear description of the iTunes library. The info on the iTunes Media folder structure, and how it's managed by the iTunes Database file, and the distinction between Managed and Referenced files, will be quite useful in the future. Thanks!
