Smart phone theft has been a huge problem for police, particularly the theft of Apple products. Apple has taken steps to help prevent this problem by introducing the new Activation Lock anti-theft system with iOS 7 to help prevent the re-use of stolen iOS devices.

The New York Times has now released some numbers that show us just how much this anti-theft system has really helped:

  • New York theft involving Apple products has dropped by 19%
  • San Francisco theft involving Apple products has dropped by 38%
  • London theft involving Apple products has dropped by 24%

These numbers are six months after the feature was introduced and are being compared to the six months before the feature.

Apple is paring up with other smartphone manufacturers in an effort to bring this feature to all new mobile devices.
