Oct 032011

Wall Street Journal reports that Sprint has agreed to buy 30.5 million iPhones over the next four years from Apple for an average price of $655, which works out to $20 billion.

We’ve heard rumors that have claimed that Sprint – the third largest carrier in the US, will be offering Apple’s fifth generation iPhone, alongside with AT&T and Verizon. Sprint’s recent moves also seem to suggest that Sprint has been gearing up for the iPhone launch.

With less than 24 hours to go for Apple’s much awaited Let’s Talk iPhone event, Wall Street Journal has just dropped a bombshell.

If you’re planning to buy iPad 2 with Wi-Fi+3G in the US, then it is important to remember that you get an option to select the model that either supports AT&T’s network or Verizon’s CDMA network – not both.

Though Verizon was selling the original iPad along with AT&T, the original iPad with Wi-Fi+3G only supported AT&T’s network so Verizon had to offer the MiFi mobile hotspot with the original iPad with Wi-Fi only model for 3G data. Continue reading »

CDMA iPhone 4 makes its way to Cricket Wireless (via jailbreak)

Apple, iphone, jailbreak, Verizon  Comments Off on CDMA iPhone 4 makes its way to Cricket Wireless (via jailbreak)

As any astute follower of the “pay-as-you-go” world knows, there are quite a few back alley Cricket dealers (and quite a few main street ones as well) that will happily flash any phone you give them for use on their network — and not even Verizon’s CDMA iPhone is immune. Ready to jump ship from “America’s largest?” Of course, you’ll have to jailbreak, install some third party MMS software, and trust some random dude at the Cricket store with your precious smartphone. We’re not saying it’s wise, but it is possible, as the video below attests. Continue reading »

Verizon iPhone 4, 3G mobile hotspot

It’ll probably be subject to an additional fee as usual, but Verizon and Apple have just revealed that the new CDMA iPhone 4 will act as a mobile WiFi connection for up to five devices. It’ll come with an iOS-specific version of the Verizon 3G Mobile Hotspot that folks have been enjoying on their Droids for many moons now. That should allowing for laptops, tablets and the like to get online via iPhone without a pesky cord, and almost certainly make the long-verboten iPhone – iPad tethering connection finally attainable. Joy to the world!

Update: Verizon called it an app, but getting hands-on we can see that’s not the case at all — Personal Hotspot is built right into the CDMA iPhone 4’s build of iOS 4.2.5. Perhaps we’ll see it migrate to other devices as well?

CDMA iPhone rumored for India

More fuel for the CDMA iPhone fire today. The Wall Street Journal says that Apple is in talks with both Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices to bring a CDMA version of its iPhone — the one it again says will be on sale at Verizon early next year — to India. The discussions have apparently been ongoing for four or five months according to one WSJ source.

This comes out as news of iPhone exclusivity arrangements are ending in both Germany and The Netherlands. In Germany, Deutsche Telekom loses its exclusive now that both O2 and Vodafone will be offering Apple’s finest before the holidays. In Holland, T-Mobile just lost its exclusive arrangement as both KPN and Vodafone have announced plans to carry the iPhone — no specific dates were mentioned though, like Germany, in time for the holidays is a pretty good guess.

New iPhone, iPad model codes set up for iTunes activation bypass — CDMA versions, maybe?

Apple, iphone, iphone 3.1.3, iphone 4, rumors  Comments Off on New iPhone, iPad model codes set up for iTunes activation bypass — CDMA versions, maybe?
Aug 162010

So BGR’s got a tipster lined up with alleged details from within iOS 4 beta firmware that shows a section dedicated to bypassing the usual iTunes activation scheme for three new product codes: iPhone3,2, iPhone 3,3, and iProd 2,1. Actually, these product codes aren’t “new,” per se; we saw all three of them in the iPad’s firmware back in April, but they’ve yet to make the giant leap to officialdom. What’s different here, then? Well, apparently, this activation-bypass scheme has historically had a tendency to show up in Apple’s beta firmware right around the time a new iPhone goes into testing — ostensibly so that field engineers don’t need to worry about that rigmarole to do their jobs — which suggests that these new models are getting ready for action. BGR’s source says these will be the CDMA iPhone and the next-gen iPad, though you can’t tell that from the product codes alone, and that doesn’t explain why we’ve actually got two new iPhones listed. For what it’s worth, the current iPad — iPad1,1 — used to go by the moniker iProd1,1 in firmware, so it stands to reason that we really are looking at a new tablet here. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got some Verizon Wireless field tech van recon to do.
