Following the devastation wrought by the recent Japanese earthquake, Apple has hooked the country’s early warning system into iOS 5. The tectonically-volatile nation has the most sophisticated alarm in the world, delivering life-saving warnings seconds or minutes before disaster strikes. iOS users already had access to this functionality via apps like Yurekuru, but iOS 5 will bring it directly into the operating system. The service can be activated in the Notification Center settings pane, accompanied by a warning that the constant connection will deplete your battery faster — a fair exchange if it saves your life.

Skype upgrade for iPhone lets it videocall Skype for TV

There’s a new update out for Skype on iOS devices today that which expands the new videocalling compatibility to “a wider selection of Skype clients and devices” by adding the h.264 compatibility necessary to chat with any Skype for TV clients. That’s available on certain LG, Panasonic and Samsung HDTVs right now, while Sony and Vizio have both announced it will be in some of their new HDTVs coming out later this year. The ability to call mobile devices seems to give a big edge to Skype over other living room videochat setups from Cisco, Logitech or Microsoft’s Kinect, but even with a compatible (& pricey)camera in hand, good luck finding someone out enjoying the world who wants to chat while you’re chilling on the couch.

See that screen there? That’s from the minty fresh beta 4 of iPhone OS 4.0, which was just released to developers moments ago. Unless our eyes are badly mistaken, that’s an option to setup internet tethering on AT&T, something that WWAN warriors have been waiting for since… oh, forever. We’re downloading the new build as we speak, and we’ll let you know if we find anything out. Oh, and don’t get your hopes up too high — AT&T proclaimed that it was “still waiting on better network performance” before enabling iPhone tethering just three weeks ago.

Apple is building Facebook features into the latest version of its iPhone software, we’re told by a plugged-in source in the mobile industry. These features could be announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on June 7, when Apple is expected to unveil a new iPhone.

Our source tells us that Apple is at least going to build Facebook contact syncing directly into the iPhone software, so you can pull Facebook contacts into your iPhone’s phonebook. This is a no-brainer, and is already a feature that some of Apple’s competition offers, so it makes sense to include on the iPhone.
