Cupertino’s newest hardware may have us purring, but Apple hasn’t left those of us with existing hardware out in the cold. iOS 6 should be appearing as an available update right now, or at least very shortly — depending on how taxed those servers get. It’ll be compatible with every iPhone since the 3GS, iPod touch 4G / 5G and this-and-last-year’s vintage of the iPad. Given the inexorable march of technology, some of the newer features won’t work on the older devices, but you can use our compatability checker to determine what new things you’ll be able to do in the next few hours. Siri is some seriously impressive technology being able to have what feels like a very real conversation with a piece of technology should not be underrated as an impressive technological feat. New patent application may suggest that Siri is on its way to other devices, thanks to a pairing method that would see Siri live on an iPhone, but then be jacked into a second device. The two devices listed as possibilities in that patent application? Both desktop and notebook computers. Continue reading »

When Apple launched the iPhone 4S in October of 2011, one of the most talked about and probably its headline feature was the inclusion of the Siri intelligent assistant software which attempted to make life easier by being able to accomplish tasks given to it through a simple voice command. When invoked by the user, Siri is ready and able to take spoken orders which can range from setting meetings up in the calendar, checking the location of friends and family or even pulling up a weather forecast for most locations in the world. We’re live from Apple’s event in San Francisco where Tim Cook has just announced additional language capabilities for Siri. That disembodied helper, ushered in by the iPhone 4S, is now getting a localized Japanese equivalent as part of the iOS 5.1 update rolling out today and slated to hit Japan over the next few weeks. Looks like those prior leaks were right on the money. Now we’ll just have to wait and see if that camera slider makes the cut. Continue reading »

When iOS 5 was first introduced to the world for public consumption in October 2011, it was immediately evident that it contained a number of highly useful features which would quickly become the focus of the jailbreaking development community. The introduction of Notification Center was seen as a huge, much needed feature addition to iOS, but also provided an entirely new entity for developers to hook into and enhance on a jailbroken device. I had mentioned in an earlier post that one of the things which I was most looking forward to with the release ofthe iPhone 4S jailbreak was the new and innovative uses for the personal assistant, Siri. Developers have been itching to get their hands on a jailbroken 4S to allow them to test, amend and then release their tweaks and enhancements which will bring more power to the already very functional and intelligent voice analysis software. Unfortunately, it means that it can end up being a drain of your iPhone’s battery life, which is the most likely reason why Apple did not make it an “Always on” feature.

Normally you have to press and hold the home button for several seconds to activate these voice functions, but now with this app these features are completely hands-free! Just speak the keyword! The service also works with headphones and bluetooth headsets. Continue reading »
