Skype launches HD video calls for Mac OS X Lion

Apple, News  Comments Off on Skype launches HD video calls for Mac OS X Lion
Aug 082011

Today Skype announced the 5.3 update for Mac OS X which brings HD video calls to Lion among a handful of other UI enhancements and bug fixes. The official Skype blog explains:

With Skype 5.3 for Mac OS X, you’ll also be able to send and receive HD quality video when talking to your friends and family. You’ll need to use the Mac’s built-in webcam or choose from a variety of webcams from our Skype Shop, such as the Logitech C910, to make video calls in crystal clear HD quality. To receive clear HD video calls on your Mac, we recommend an upload/download speed of 1.5Mbps.

While previous versions of Skype, even 2.8, seem to run rather well on Lion, official support should iron out any bugs you’ve been noticing since upgrading. The new update is not only available for Lion users, however, Skype’s blog post notes it is also compatible back to Leopard.

You can grab Skype 5.3 for Mac OS X here. We’ll let you know if we find anything else interesting in this latest update.

Details about Apple’s iOS 5

Apple, breaking news  Comments Off on Details about Apple’s iOS 5

Scott Forstall has just taken the WWDC 2011 stage and details about the changes and improvements in iOS 5 are flowing thick and fast.

– Firstly, stats. Scott notes that Apple has so far sold 200 million iOS devices, with more than 25 million of those being iPads. There have been 14 billion downloads from the App Store, tallying over $2.5 billion paid out in revenue to app developers. The iTunes Store isn’t doing badly, either, with 15 billion songs sold.
– And the first new feature: an overhaul of notifications. At last! A new Notification Center aggregates all your, well, notifications into one and is accessible by swiping down a menu from the top of the screen. Yes, just like Android. Small X buttons alongside each note allow you to dismiss it, though there’s no “clear all” option for the more decisive among us. Notifications are also making their way onto the lockscreen, where swiping across a text message takes you right into it. A little something like Samsung’s TouchWiz implementation. Apple FaceTime for Mac out of beta, Now available on the Mac App Store for $0.99!

Apple, facetime, Mac, News  Comments Off on Apple FaceTime for Mac out of beta, Now available on the Mac App Store for $0.99!
Feb 242011

After a lengthy four-month beta trial, Apple’s decided that it’s about time to make FaceTime for Mac available to the masses, meaning any Mac user can finally do video chat with other Mac or iOS users. Unlike the app’s free iOS counterpart, though, you’ll have to chip in $0.99 on the Mac App Store for some enlarged video chat sessions. But hey, it’s totally worth it, especially if you have a 27-inch screen to play with.
