Verizon iPhone: Over-the-air updates for iOS 5

Having spent a good part of our day yesterday negotiating with iTunes and downloading a whopping 666.2MB file to update our iPhone to version 4.3.3 — a version, we might add, whose sole claim to fame is the removal of things — we know well the pains of updating Apple’s mobile software. Those aches, however, may soon be coming to an end. 9to5Mac has multiple sources informing it that Apple and Verizon are scheming to start delivering iOS updates over the air from this fall, or just as soon as iOS 5 is made available. Untethered OS updates are a familiar feature to users of other smartphone operating systems and even the iOS-infused Apple TV, but getting Apple’s mobile devices up to date has so far always required going through the company’s own cable and software. Sn0wbreeze untethered jailbreak for Verizon iPhone, Windows users

iphone, jailbreak, News  Comments Off on Sn0wbreeze untethered jailbreak for Verizon iPhone, Windows users

Verizon iPhone owners, your untethered jailbreaking prayers have been answered. Hacker iH8Sn0w updated the Sn0wbreeze tool, adding support for Big Red handsets running iOS 4.2.7 and finally allowing those who have forsaken AT&T to bring the magic of Cydia to their phones without the cumbersome need for tethering. The usual caveats apply: you’ll have to get your hands on a copy of iOS 4.2.7 (just do a little Googling) and there is always a very small chance that something could go horribly wrong and you’ll wind up with a very shiny paperweight. Mac users will have to sit this one out — Sn0wbreeze is a Windows-only affair. Hit up the source link to get your iHack on.

Verizon iPhone will go on general sale at 7AM on February 10th

iphone 4, News, Verizon  Comments Off on Verizon iPhone will go on general sale at 7AM on February 10th
Feb 022011

Apple has just announced that tomorrow morning’s early Verizon iPhone pre-orders will be available through its online Store as well — starting at 3AM, available to current VZW subscribers only, and sold on a first-come, first-served basis. More pertinent news, however, can be found deeper in the company’s press release, which states that pre-orders will be opened up to the general public on February 9th, when you’ll be able to reserve or have one delivered on launch day, February 10th. Shops will open their doors early, 7AM — matching AT&T’s early opening for the iPhone 4’s original launch way back in June — and availability will be broad, encompassing Apple’s brick and mortar Stores, Verizon’s 2,000+ retail locations, select partners, and even a zany 1-800-2 JOIN IN phone number you can call. So, really, the only people left without a Verizon iPhone on February 11th should be those that don’t actually want one.

Now the real question is that whether iOS 4.2.6 is vulnerable to Geohot’s Limera1n exploit or not? MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team thinks it probably is: Continue reading »

Jan 262011

Competition is always good for customers and looks like iPhone users are going to soon benefit from it with the launch of CDMA iPhone on Verizon’s network.

The Verizon iPhone 4 pricing details that were briefly revealed by Apple today confirmed that Verizon will be offering unlimited data plans to its iPhone customers.

Associated Press has just reported that the news of the unlimited data plans is putting a lot of pressure on AT&T and it is quietly giving some of its iPhone customers the option to switch to unlimited data plan to stop them from switching to Verizon. Continue reading »

Verizon iPhone 4, 3G mobile hotspot

It’ll probably be subject to an additional fee as usual, but Verizon and Apple have just revealed that the new CDMA iPhone 4 will act as a mobile WiFi connection for up to five devices. It’ll come with an iOS-specific version of the Verizon 3G Mobile Hotspot that folks have been enjoying on their Droids for many moons now. That should allowing for laptops, tablets and the like to get online via iPhone without a pesky cord, and almost certainly make the long-verboten iPhone – iPad tethering connection finally attainable. Joy to the world!

Update: Verizon called it an app, but getting hands-on we can see that’s not the case at all — Personal Hotspot is built right into the CDMA iPhone 4’s build of iOS 4.2.5. Perhaps we’ll see it migrate to other devices as well?

Verizon iPhone might require new cases

iphone, iphone 4, Verizon  Comments Off on Verizon iPhone might require new cases
Jan 112011

The leaks suggested that the Verizon iPhone would have have slightly relocated buttons, and it’s true — as you can see in the photo above, the newly revised CDMA antenna notch has pushed the volume and mute controls down a hair from GSM version. That means a lot of cases — Apple’s current bumpers included — won’t fit properly on the Verizon version, although many third-party cases feature an open slot for the buttons that might still work. Either way, we’d bet Apple and third-party manufacturers are scrambling to have compatible cases in stores before the February 10th launch date — just make sure to check yours first if you’re switching from AT&T.
